Area athletes shine at Iowa Summer Games

AMES - Several athletes from area towns competed in the recent Iowa Summer Games in Ames.

Cherokee's Calvin Chalstrom placed first in the 200 Medley for 9-10 year old boys, in a time of 2:41.4, second in the 220 Mixed Medley for 10 and under boys (2:48.6), and third in the 25 meter breaststroke for 9-10 boys, in a time of 22.5.

Jodi Mongan won the 500 meter freestyle swimming for 30-34 year olds, in 6:14.8, and Kylie Mongan finished second in the 100 Medley and third in the 50 meter breaststroke for age 8 and under girls, with times of 1:30.8 and :52.6, respectively,

In track and field, Breanna Mathes placed third in the girls' 15-16 year old 400 meter dash with a time of 1:05.2, and also placed third in the 15-16 800 meter run, with a time of 2:49.3. Jessica Mathes placed second in the girls' 13-14 year-old 1500 meter run, in a time of 5:30.3, and third in the 13-14 800 meter run (2:39.3)

In tennis, Shannon Shroeder finished second in Mixed Doubles, age 18 and under, and in folkstyle wrestling, Taylor Wintz finished third in 9th-12th grade Bracket 13.

Three representatives from Aurelia placed in their events. The "Bohnenkamp Bombers," comprised of Tom Bohnenkamp, Matthew Bohnenkamp, Eric Sonksen and Travis Busby, took first place in the Men's Golf Best Shot, 4- Person ; Skylar Solko of Aurelia placed second in Bracket 10 of the 3rd-4th Grade Folkstyle Wrestling, and Jon Tuttle placed second in Folkstyle Wrestling 3rd and 4th grade, Bracket 11.

Cleghorn's Beth McDermott won the golf competition for women 40-49, with an 18- hole score of 101.

Correctionville's Kayla Knaack took first place finishes in two weightlifting events, lifting 181pounds in the Open Bench Press and Unequipped competitions.

Galva's Cole Egger placed second in the Boys' singles tennis for age 18 and under.

Holstein's Brayden Butler finished second in the 2nd grade bracket 4 folkstyle wrestling; Casey Faulkenberry won bracket one of the K-2 folkstyle wrestling; Mckinna Faulkenberry won Bracket 5 of the 3rd-4th grade folkstyle wrestling; Kyle Schiernbeck finished third in Bracket 11 of the 5th-6th grade folkstyle wrestling. Washta's Chance Reusch placed second in 3rd - 4th Grade Bracket 5 in folkstyle wrestling.

Laird Waller took third in 18-and-under mixed doubles tennis and Duncan Wright swam in several events in the 40-44 age group - taking first place in the 1000 meter freestyle (15:51.7) and 100 butterfly (1:29.5) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:33.2) and individual medley (1:28.8).

Marcus' Rodney Ebert took second place in men's golf in age group 40-49, with an 18-hole score of 82.

Peterson's Abbey Biedenfeld finished second in free throw shooting for 19-29 year-old women, sinking 12, and second in 19-29 women's shootout with a score of 28;

The Iowa Games, Iowa's largest amateur sports festival, provides more than 20,000 athletes with a variety of Olympic-style sports during the Summer and Winter Games. The Games are part of the National Congress of State Games and are open to Iowa residents of all ages and abilities. The Iowa Games is hosted by the Iowa Sports Foundation, a nonprofit organization which has a participation base of over 125,000 Iowans.
