Cherokee Swim Team news

The Cherokee Swim Team traveled to Rockwell City on June 18 for their first meet of the season. No results were available for that meet.

On June 25 the team traveled to Humboldt for the second meet of their season. The meet featured six teams including Humboldt, Fort Dodge, Clarion, Hampton, Webster City and Cherokee.

Cherokee's swimmers made a good showing against such a large field of competitors. They won the first eight events of the meet and a total of 33 of the 82 events on the evening.

There were only two swimmers who were able to win all three of their individual events and they were Brett Walker in the 11-12 boys age group, who won the 100m freestyle, the 50m freestyle and the 100m individual medley; the other was Dustin Rosewall for the 13-14 boys winning the 100m freestyle, the 50m backstroke and the 50m freestyle.

There were five swimmers who won two of their individual events during the meet. For the 8 and under girls Kylie Mongan won the 25m breaststroke and the 100m individual medley (a new event for that age group this year), while Jennifer Barritt won both the 50m freestyle and the 25m freestyle. On the boy's side of the age group Tyler Richardson won the 50m freestyle and the 25m breaststroke. For the 9-10 boys Adam Cedar won both the 100m and 50m freestyle events, while Emily Haselhoff won the 50m backstroke and the 100m individual medley for the 11-12 girls.

Ten more swimmers captured first place finishes in one individual event and they were: Abby Goettsch in the 8 and under girls' 25m butterfly, Kaely Hummel in the 9-10 girls' 100m freestyle, Paige Kraft in the 9-10 girls' 25m backstroke, Brett Barritt in the 9-10 boys' 25m backstroke, Calvin Chalstrom in the 9-10 boys' 25m breaststroke, T.J. Hockenson in the 9-10 boys' 25m freestyle, Halie Kraft in the 11-12 girls' 100m freestyle, Brennon Prentice in the 11-12 boys' 50m backstroke, Denise Freed in the 13-14 girls' 100m freestyle, Brianna Fowler in the 13-14 girls' 50m backstroke and Sophia Haselhoff in the 15-18 girls' 50m breaststroke.

Cherokee had six relays that finished first place. The 8 and under girls' relays won both the medley and free relays in their age group. The medley relay team was Kylie Mongan, Abby Goettsch, Taylor Richardson and Lindsay Williams; while the free relay was Mongan, Goettsch, Williams and Addisyn Jensen. The 8 and under boys medley relay team made up of Grant Wulfsen, Carson Mongan, Tyler Richardson and Wyatt Kraft also took first. The 9-10 boys won both their relay events with the following team: Brett Barritt, Adam Cedar, Calvin Chalstrom and T.J. Hockenson. Finally the 11-12 boys medley relay team of Brett Walker, Brennon Prentice, Dallas Boger and Mitchell west also won for the Cherokee team.

"This was a fun and challenging meet to have early in the season, and I was pleased with the results of the team's hard work so far," said Coach Jodi Mongan.

After hosting Emmetsburg on July 2, the Cherokee Swim Team was again on the road on July 9 to Laurens for another dual meet, their fourth meet of the season.

Cherokee had a very solid meet and had five swimmers who were triple winners in their individual events. Kylie Mongan won the 50m freestyle, the 25m butterfly and the 100m individual medley for the 8 and under girls. Adam Cedar won the 50m freestyle, the 25m freestyle and the 100m individual medley in the 9-10 boys age group. Brett Walker again won the 100m and 50m freestyle events as well as the 100m individual medley in the 11-12 boys age group. In the 13-14 age group, Brianna Fowler, for the girls, and Dustin Rosewall, for the boys, each won the 100m and 50m freestyle races as well as the 50m backstroke.

Four more swimmers were double winners during the meet. Tyler Richardson won the 8 and under boys 25m backstroke and 25m breaststroke, while Brett Barritt won the 100m freestyle and the 25m backstroke for the 9-10 boys. In the 11-12 age group, Emily Haselhoff won the 50m backstroke and the 100m individual medley for the girls, while Brennon Prentice won the 50m backstroke and the 50m breaststroke for the boys.

An additional 11 swimmers posted single event wins on the evening. For the 8 and under girls Jennifer Barritt won the 25m breaststroke, Addisyn Jensen won the 25m backstroke and Abby Goettsch won the 25m freestyle. In the 9-10 age group their were two girls and two boys with single wins. Paige Kraft won the 25m backstroke while Kaely Hummel won the 25m butterfly for the girls and T.J. Hockenson won the 25m butterfly and Calvin Chalstrom won the 25m breaststroke for the boys. In the 11-12 age group Halie Kraft, on the girls' side, and Dallas Boger, on the boys' side, each won the 50m butterfly. Finally in the 15-18 girls' age group Sophia Haselhoff won the 50m backstroke and Paige Stieneke won the 50m butterfly.

The Cherokee teams were able to win 10 of the 14 relays they competed in. The 8 and under girls won the medley relay with Addisyn Jensen, Lindsay Williams, Kylie Mongan and Abby Goettsch and the free relay with Williams, Mongan, Goettsch and Jennifer Barritt. The 9-10 girls also won both the medley and free relays with team members Paige Kraft, Liz Herrera, Kaely Hummel and Hayley Graybill. The 11-12 boys were the next group to win both their relays with team members Dallas Boger, Brennon Prentice, Brett Walker and Mitchell West in the medley and Boger, Walker, West and Nathan Fowler in the free relay. Finally, the 15-18 girls' relay teams of Brianna Fowler, Liz Dawson, Sophia Haselhoff and Paige Stieneke won both their relay events as well.

On July 16, the Cherokee Swim Team hosted a very large and very fast Storm Lake swim team in their last regularly scheduled dual meet of the 2008 season. Storm Lake boasted over 100 swimmers and yet Cherokee's 50 swimmers were able to garner a total of 31 individual wins and 10 more in relays out of 82 events during the meet.

Of the 18 individuals who earned the 31 wins there were four that were triple winners for the evening. Kylie Mongan won the 8 and under girls' 25m butterfly and 25m breaststroke and 100m individual medley. In the process she improved her record setting time from the previous home meet in the I.M. from 2:07.96 to 2:04.14. It was a record setting time during the first home meet because the event had never been swum before. Tyler Richardson was a triple winner for the 8 and under boys, winning the 25m backstroke, 25m butterfly and 25m breaststroke. Brett Walker won his three events-the 100m freestyle, the 50m freestyle and the 100m individual medley in which he broke a record he had set at the first home meet of the season. The team record was previously held by Todd Jolly in 1994 at 1:31.41. Brett swam it on July 2 in 1:30.56 and on July 16 improved that time to 1:29.18. The final triple winner was Brianna Fowler for the 13-14 girls. She won the 100m freestyle, the 50m backstroke and the 50m freestyle.

The team had five more swimmers who were double winners during the meet. Paige Kraft won the 9-10 girls' 25m backstroke and the 25m freestyle. Brett Barritt won the same two events on the boys' side of the age group. Additionally, Adam Cedar won the 9-10 boys' 25m butterfly and the 50m freestyle. In the 11-12 age group Emily Haselhoff and Brennon Prentice won the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke for the girls and boys respectively.

Cherokee had nine swimmers who posted wins in single events during the evening. In the 8 and under girls' age group Abby Goettsch won the 50m freestlye, Taylor Richardson won the 25m backstroke and Lindsay Williams won the 25m freestyle. For the 9-10 boys, Calvin Chalstrom continued his domination in the 25m breaststroke by winning. Mikayla Schuett posted a win in the 11-12 girls' 50m freestyle, while Mitchell West won the 50m butterfly on the boys' side. For the 13-14 girls Denise Freed won the 50m breaststroke and Dustin Rosewall won the boys' 100m freestyle. Paige Stieneke was also a winner in the 15-18 girls' 50m butterfly during the meet.

The winning relays were the 8 and under girls' medley and free relays made up of Addisyn Jensen, Lindsay Williams, Kylie Mongan and Abby Goettsch in the medley and Williams, Mongan, Goettsch and Jennifer Barritt in the free. The 9-10 boys also won both their relays with team members Brett Barritt, Calvin Chalstrom, Adam Cedar and Taylan Entriken. The 11-12 girls teams of Emily Haselhoff, Halie Kraft, Emilee McGee and Mikayla Schuett also won both their medley and free relays as did the boys' teams of Nate Fowler, Brennon Prentice, Brett Walker and Mitchell West. Finally the 15-18 girls relay teams also won in the medley relay with Brianna Fowler, Liz Dawson, Paige Stieneke and Denise Freed. They also won the free relay with Sophia Haselhoff, Dawson, Freed and Stieneke.

A final relay that took first place but earned no points was the 8 and under mixed relay team of Carson Mongan, Kaiden Royster, Kameron Royster and Kenna Mongan.

The Cherokee Swim Team finished their dual meet season on July 23 when they hosted both the Humboldt and Fort Dodge swim teams who came in very limited numbers on a rainy evening to make up a meet originally scheduled to be the first of the season on June 11.

Cherokee's 53 competing swimmers, the highest number of competitors of any meet this season for Cherokee, were able to win 42 individual events and all 14 relays in which they competed.

Cherokee saw a whopping seven triple winners during the evening. Kylie Mongan won the 8 and under girls' 50m freestyle, 25m butterfly and 25m breaststroke while Tyler Richardson won the 25m backstroke, 25m butterfly and 25m breaststroke on the boys' side of the age group. Kaely Hummel was able to win the 25m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 100m individual medley in the 9-10 girls' age group. Kaely's 100 I.M. time broke her own record set earlier in the year on this new event. She first set the record at 2:10.63 on July 2 and improved that time by a stunning 10 seconds to 2:00.50 at this meet. Emily Haselhoff won the 11-12 girls' 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 100m individual medley while on the boys' side, Brett Walker won the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle and 100m individual medley. Megan Hummel competing in her only meet of the season captured first place finishes in the 13-14 girls' 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle. Dustin Rosewall also won his three events, the 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle, in the 13-14 boys' age group.

There were only two swimmers who posted wins in two of their events and they were: Adam Cedar in the 9-10 boys' 100m freestyle and 50m freestyle as well as Brennon Prentice in the 11-12 boys' 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke.

An additional 17 swimmers posted single wins during the meet-some for the first time! This made a total of 26 swimmers winning at least one individual event during the meet. In the 8 and under age group Abby Goettsch won the girls' 25m freestyle and Lindsay Williams won the 100m individual medley breaking a record set earlier in the season by Kylie Mongan at 2:04.14. The new mark set by Lindsay was 2:00.06 in her final race of the season. Kael Royster posted his first individual win of the season in the boys' 50m freestyle as did Grant Wulfsen in the 25m freestyle. In the 9-10 age group Liz Herrera posted an individual win in the girls' 100m freestyle, Paige Kraft in the 25m backstroke and Hayley Graybill in the 25m freestyle; while for the boys Calvin Chalstrom again won the 25m breaststroke, and T.J. Hockenson won the 25m freestyle. In the 11-12 age group Halie Kraft won the girls' 100m freestyle and Mikayla Schuett the girls' 50m freestyle while Dallas Boger won the boys' 50m butterfly. The two 13-14 girls' age group winners were Brianna Fowler in the 50m backstroke and Denise Freed in the 50m breaststroke. Finally for the 15-18 girls, Paige Stieneke won the 50m butterfly, Liz Dawson the 50m breaststroke and Emily Cook the 100m freestyle.
