Forrest was born in Alta in 1918 to Peter and Mary Swanson. After Mary's death in 1923, his aunt and uncle, Pete and Albertina Vicstrum, adopted Forrest. Forrest served as a medic in the army the early 1940's, and then returned to Iowa to marry M. Pearl (Polly) Vicstrum, of Storm Lake, in 1946. Forrest and Polly moved to Cherokee in 1949 with their daughter, Donna Vicstrum (Clark) and later their daughter Patricia Vicstrum (Carlson). In Cherokee, Forrest worked for Watkins as a traveling salesman; Council Oak, Swansons and Randalls grocery stores; the MHI; and the State of Iowa liquor store, later owned by Chuck Weeks. He was also very active as treasurer and deacon of the First Baptist Church. Forrest retired in 1986.
