Football Eagles fall short, 19-13

DUNLAP - The young Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn football Eagles spotted Boyer Valley a 13-0 first-quarter lead before answering back with two touchdowns of their own to tie the game, only to fall short 19-13 in season-opening non-district football action here on Aug. 29.

Boyer Valley scored those two early TDs on a one-yard run and six-yard run, and then cashed in the winnng TD in the third period on a 10-yard fumble recovery and return.

MMC scored a TD in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Lukas Nelson, and tallied again in the third frame on a thrilling 84-yard kick-off return by Jacob Lehnhoff following the Boyer Valley fumble return TD. Jordan Boekhout kicked the PAT after Lehnhoff's big score.

The Eagles rushed 29 times for just 42 yards against the pesky BV defense, and Nelson was 10-20 passing for 91 yards and two interceptions. Boekhout was 1-4 passing for 14 yards. Nelson was leading ground gainer with 19 carrie for 33 yards.

The ground-oriented, ball-control hosts rushed 47 times for 226 yards, and completed 1-7 passes for just nine yards.

Jordan Petersen led MMC in tackles with 13, followed by Jerad Letsche 11, Lehnhoff eight, Blaine Dammann eight, and Kyle Wester seven.

Both teams managed nine first downs in the game.

MMC hosted Clay Central-Everly on Sept. 5.
