NEWELL - Undefeated and rated Class 1A Newell-Fonda turned a 21-7 halftime lead into a 33-7 victory over 2A Buffalo Ridge here on Sept. 5th.
The visiting Bison scored their lone touchdown as time expired in the first half on a 15-yard TD pass from freshman Seth Johnson to Patrick McAreavy, with Johnson then kicking the successful PAT.
Buffalo Ridge moved the ball, but could not get it into the end zone. The Bison rushed 35 times for 150 yards, and Johnson finished with 10 pass completions on 24 attempts for 108 yards and one TD. Four interceptions by the alert N-F secondary crippled the Buffalo Ridge offense.
Tyler Kenny led the Bison rushers with 23 carries for 126 yards, and Daren Miller hauled it eight times for 20 yards. McAreavy caught three passes for 36 yards and a TD, while Ray Wedeking caught three for 25 yards.
"This was a much better game than the score reflects," noted Bison co-coach Butch Faulkenberry. "Our offense totaled 257 yards. Our offensive line looked like it took a step forward, playing more physical and getting off the snap more efficiently.
"Defensively, we were challenged by a tough option game that we needed to make adjustments on. We gave up some big plays on the edge and will need to improve in that area."
Mark Cronin led the Bison defense with 12 tackles, while Taylor Nees registered six, Josh Alesch six, and Miller four.
