Cherokee cross country teams run at Brunsville

BRUNSVILLE - Sioux City Heelan won the boys division and Sioux City North the girls division at the annual Le Mars Cross Country Meet run on the Brunsville Golf Course on September 9.

Heelan tallied 46 points in the 10-team boys field, with MOC-Floyd Valley second with 52, and Orange City Unity Christian third with 87. The Cherokee boys placed 10th with 227 points.

North scored 46 points in the 10-team girls field, with Unity Christian second with 56, and Heelan third with 68. Cherokee placed 10th with 308 points.

Nate O'Bryan paced the Braves with a 13th-place finish in 18:05, followed by Nick O'Bryan 28th in 18:58, Kody Sump 59th in 21:26, Zach Dodd 61st in 21:32, and John Bieber 68th in 25:07.

In the girls competition for Cherokee, Chyenne Mortenson was 44th in 19:50, followed by Katy Hart 63rd in 22:33, Whitney Axiotis 66th in 23:46, Claudia Campuzano 67th in 23:47, and Abby Hayes 68th in 26:54.

In boys JV action, Matt Sparks clocked a 25:10, and in the girls race, Amanda Lewis was timed in 26:37.

"It was a cool evening - good running weather," said veteran Cherokee coach Deb Hankens. "This was a tougher course than last week's Spirit Lake Meet. Nate continues to look competitive."
