SLOAN - Nate Kerns rushed for 112 yards and scored a touchdown on a 28-yard run in the opening minutes to lead Westwood past South O'Brien 23-7 in a Class 1A Dustrict 1 football game here on Sept. 12.
The winning Rebels also got a two-yard TD run by Gabe WIngert and a 28-yard TD pass from Blake Jorgensen to Mike Steinhoff to seal the deal.
South O'Brien scored a TD in the first quarter on a five-yard run by Mike Faust after a Westwood fumble, making the score 7-6 after the first period.
SOS threatened in the second frame after quarterback Jarod Syndergaard threw a 34-yard pass to Ryan Brasser to the Rebel 15-yard line. The Wolverines then ran three plays and with a fourth and two, went for a first down and came up short on a Mike Faust run.
Taylor Schroeder led SOS on defense with 14 tackles, while Cody Rehder had 13, a sack, and fumble recovery, and Syndergaard had 12 tackles. Dane Christensen had a QB sack and six tackles.
"If we could just put together a whole game with all the improvements we have made so far this year, we would have something," said Wolverine coach Mark Fuhrman.
