Area runners compete at G-H

HOLSTEIN -- Several area Cross Country runners competed at the annual Galva-Holstein Cross Country Classic at Holstein on Saturday Sept. 13.

The top individual performer among area schools was Cherokee Washington's Nate O'Bryan, who toured the 5 k course in a time of 17:58.18 to finish 14th in Class A Varsity Boys' action. His brother Nick finished 36th, with a time of 19:06.18. Zach Mosbach, Kody Sump and Zach Dodd also competed for the Braves.

In Class B Boys' Varsity competition, Galva-Holstein's John Harris ran the 5 k course in a time of 18:40.98 to place 11th, just behind Jay Welp of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn who was 10th in 18:34.43. G-H's Collin Bubke ran a 19:35.50 to take 31st, while the Pirates' Josh Mohr's time of 19:46.37 was good for 36th, and Josh Schwanz' 20:15.07 placed him 46th.

South O'Brien's Reese Powers (19:50.35) and Cole Pleggenkuble (19:52.22) placed 38th and 39th, respectively; MMC's Jacob Pearson was 45th, with a time of 20:14.54; Aurelia's Taylor Wetzel placed 48th (20:17.94) and Brandon Pederson was 54th (20:44.83).

In the Girls' Varsity competition, Cherokee's Chy Mortenson was 60th in Class A competition, running the 4k course in 21:03.20, while teammates Whitney Axiotis (23:38.58) and Katy Hart (23:47.53) placed 70th and 72nd, respectively.

In Class B, Galva-Holstein runners Jessica Mathes, Jayde Boyle and Ashley Drey all placed among the top 15 finishers. Mathes (17:37.04) took 10th; Boyle (17:40.45) took 11th; and Drey (17:44.00) placed 14th. The Lady Pirates' Meg Kofmehl was 20th, with a time of 18:05.49; Breanna Mathes placed 29th with a time of 18:25.43, while Sarah Forristal turned in a time of 19:53.84 for 54th and Annie McAreavy was 61st, in 20:00.04.

South O'Brien's Ashton Lansink ran 18:14.18, good for 24th, , while the Wolverines' Ashli Sohn was 63rd, in 20:01.11, and Allison Schimmer ran a 20:07.80 to place 66th. Megan McCauley, Morgan Ebel and Jill Eldridge also completed the race.

River Valley's Kaysi Byers was 27th, with a time of 18:16.53, and Jess Sievers also ran for the Wolverines. Jeri Welp was the highest finisher for Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, completing the course in a time of 21:24.27.

Area JV boys competing included Galva-Holstein's Tim Martin, whose 22:13.15 time over the 5 k course placed him 39th. Teammate Shelby Stevenson was 60th, in a time of 23:02.78, and Austin Beyers and Jon Klotz also ran for the Pirates. Matt Sparks and John Bieber ran for the Cherokee JV boys.

In the JV girls' competition, Galva-Holstein runners included Michaela Else (20:05 for 4k), Shelby Bennett, Kirstin Wessling and Shelby Linton, and Cherokee runners were Abby Hayes and Amanda Lewis.

Cherokee Junior High boys Jaden Lux and Conner Ogren also competed, and Lux's time of 14:22 placed him 29th .
