The 2008 Cherokee Washington High School Homecoming celebration kicked off on Saturday Sept. 20 with a new event.
This year there was a volleyball powder puff game, with the high school boys playing volleyball in the WHS gymnasium, with the freshmen boys playing the sophomores, with the juniors vs. seniors followung immediately afterward.
Monday Sept. 22 will be 'Color Day, and' freshman will wear red, sophomores green, juniors blue and seniors white. The high school will dismiss at 1 p.m. to decorate downtown windows and George Hicks Field for homecoming.
Tuesday will be 'Western Day.' Students will come to school dressed as a cowgirl or cowboy, or farm animal. The Home Room Olympics will begin at 9:49 a.m., with the Bus Pull in front of the high school (Thursday if it rains).
Wednesday's theme will be 'Class Day.' Freshmen will come to school dressed as nerds, sophomores will dress as hippies, juniors will dress as farmers, and seniors will dress in camoflauge. Homeroom Olympics will continue at 9:49 a.m. with a zany obstacle course in the WHS gymnasium.
Thursday will be 'Costume Day,' and students will come dressed in any sort of costume, or even as a famous person. Home Room Olympics will continue at 9:49 a.m. with the students playing 'capture the flag' at the WHS football practice field. The football powder puff games will begin at 6 p.m., with the freshmen vs. sophomores, and the juniors vs. seniors at 7 p.m. The evening cocludes with Roosevelt Elementary and Cherokee Middle School faculty vs. the Washington High School faculty at 8 p.m.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, and cost of admission will be $2 for adults and $1 for students. No activity tickets will be honored for this event. A jersey auction for the powder puff game will be held at 7:15 p.m. The bonfire and pep rally will be held after the faculty game.
Friday will be 'Spirit Day,' and students will be wearing black and gold to show their support for the football players. Class skits will be held in the WHS gymnasium at 12:45 p.m., the Coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen will be in the WHS auditorium at 1:15 p.m., and the Homecoming parade will start at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Paul Methodist Church and end at the Hy-Vee Drugstore parking lot for an all -community pep rally.
The Homecoming game will start at 7 p.m. Friday Sept. 26, when the Cherokee Braves will play Clarion-Goldfield at George Hicks Field.
