The Galva-Holstein Cross Country team faced strong competition Sept. 23rd at the Sheldon Classic meet, and veteran Pirate coach Tim Thomas feels his team more than held its own.
The G-H varsity girls placed third in team scoring with 115 points, trailing only Spirit Lake Park (42) and Unity Christian (62) in the field of 12 teams.
Jessie Mathes led the Lady Pirates team with a time of 15:49, good for 10th place, and Ashley Drey (14th,16:03), Jayde Boyle (19th,16:15), Meg Kofmehl (31st ,16:39) and Breanna Mathes (38th ,16:53) completed the team's scoring. Michaela Else and Annie McAreavey also ran for the Galva-Holstein varsity.
The G-H JV girls placed sixth among JV teams, with Sarah Forristal, Shelby Bennett, Kirstin Wessling, Sarah Galvin and Shelby Linton running for the team.
The varsity boys finished 10th in team scoring, led by John Harris' 20th place time of 16:34. Collin Bubke, Josh Mohr, Josh Schwanz and Riley Cosgrove accounted for the remainder of G-H's 241 team points. Spirit Lake Park and MOC-Floyd Valley finished 1-2 with 47 and 79 points, respectively.
G-H had just three runners in the JV boys' race, so did not qualify in the team scoring. Individually, Shelby Stevenson finished 64th with a time of 19:58, with Austin Beavers and Ethan Todd also running for Galva-Holstein.
"The kids ran very well against strong competition," said Coach Thomas. "This is the highest one of our teams have ever placed at this meet."
