G-H girls 2nd at cross country meet

DENISON -- Galva-Holstein's cross country teams ran at the Denison-Schleswig Invitational here on Tuesday Sept. 30, and turned in some notable individual and team performances in a strong field which included such larger schools as Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and Harlan.

The Lady Pirates finished second in the team scoring with 82 points, trailing only champion Harlan, which had 29. Denison-Schleswig was third, followed by Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and IKM --Manning.

Leading the way for G-H was Jesse Mathes, whose time of 16:11 was good for 8th place. Jayde Boyle was 11th (16:17), Ashley Drey 18th (16:27), Meg Kofmehl 26th (17:07), Breanna Mathes 35th (17:31), Sarah Forristal 53rd (18:31) and Annie McAreavey 59th (19:00) for the talented Lady Pirate runners.

In the boys' meet, the Pirates' John Harris finished 6th, with a time of 17:34, and he was joined by teammates Collin Bubke, Josh Mohr, Josh Schwanz, Riley Cosgrove, Kyle Wessling and Shelby Stevenson in the varsity competition.

JV runners for the boys included The Pirate boys finished 10th among 16 varsity teams, scoring 218 points. Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln won the boys varsity team competition with 72 points, with Woodbine, Harlan, Carroll Kuemper and Logan-Magnolia rounding out the top five.

Galva-Holstein's JV boys, including Jamie Conlon (whose time of 20:01 was good for 4th place among JV runners), Tim Martin, Austin Beavers, Jon Klotz and Ethan Todd, scored 137 points to finish 7th in JV team scoring.

Shelby Bennett, Kirstin Wessling, Sarah Galvin and Shelby Linton ran for the black-and-orange JV girls, but did not have enough runners to qualify for the team competition.

Four Middle School G-H runners also competed- Kate Mathes and Rachel Hunt for the girls, and Austin and Tyler Drey for the boys.
