Emphasis on aging

Thursday, October 9, 2008

Careage Hills of Cherokee has recently joined the Eden Alternative, a not-for-profit organization "dedicated to remaking the experience of aging and disability across America and around the world."

The Eden Alternative supports others in the creation of communities which eliminate the plagues of lonliness, helplessness, and boredom of the aged and disabled. Pictured here are the staff and management of Careage Hills. Photo contributed.

I would like to congratulate Careage Hills on taking the next step to allow for a better environment for our elders to age in. I'm a senior at the University of Iowa in the College of Nursing and have been taught the importance of providing a nurturing and stimulating home for our aging population. The Eden Alternative, along with other various programs like it, provide a warm and caring home for those we love so much. While still providing for the elderly, the approach is much different. The ideas within the Eden Alternative are basic and yet can change and enhance the lives of those who may otherwise want to give up. It provides a framework that is centered around the people, not tasks that need to be done or forms that need to be filled out. I look forward to hearing more about the benefits this has for the community of Cherokee. Thank you Careage Hills for having the courage to take the next step in providing excellent care to those who have given so much to our community!
