POCAHONTAS - The strong Galva-Holstein Cross Country team won the girls' team title by the narrowest of margins here on Oct. 4 at the Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer Invitational.
The Lady Pirates won the title with 57 points, edging second-place Sioux Central by a single point. The host squad took third with 71 points, followed by Prairie Valley with 98 and Southern Cal-RCL with 141.
Jayde Boyle led the Galva-Holstein girls with a 2nd place finish, in a time of 16:25. Teammate Ashley Drey was 4th, in 16:33; Breanna Mathes, 8th (16:52); Meg Kofmehl, 15th (17:16) and Sarah Forristal, 28th (18:39).
In the varsity boys' competition, the Pirates finished 5th with 106 points, trailing Laurens-Marathon (57), BC-IG (61), Prairie Valley (70) and Sioux Central (87).
John Harris paced the Pirates as usual, finishing 4th, with a time of 18:11. Collin Bubke was 17th, in 19:03; Jamie Conlon, 21st (19:20); Josh Mohr, 22nd ( 19:21); and Josh Schwanz, 42nd (20:34). Riley Cosgrove and Kyle Wessling also finished for Galva-Holstein.
In Junior Varsity competition, Galva-Holstein had only four girls competing, so they weren't eligible for the JV Team Title. Annie McAreavy, Shelby Bennett, Sarah Galvin and Shelby Linton all finished among the top 20. Kirstin Wessling did not run, due to an injury.
The JV boys finished 3rd in the Boys' team standings with 57 points, coming from Don Gebers (2nd, 21:09), Tim Martin (7th, 21:56), Isaiah Miller (9th, 22:12), Shelby Stevenson (14th, 22:34) and Jon Klotz (25th, 24:06). Ethan Todd also ran and finished 27th, in 24:42.
The following Middle School students also competed: Girls - Rachel Hunt and Kate Mathes; Boys - Austin Drey, Christian Egger and Tyler Drey.
