Longtime Cherokee resident Stan Sitzmann recently underwent a triple bypass heart operation. A jokester might say something like "Well, at least now we know he has a heart," but people who know Stan know he has already proven that time and time again.

For 38 years now, Stan has organized and coordinated the Needy Children's Fund. He and his dedicated workers raise money each fall to help provide clothing for the needy children of Cherokee County and he's not about to take a year off because of a little thing like a heart bypass.

Long-time helpers Tom, Mary, Naomi, Mike and Eden Keller will be handling the fund raising in Cherokee, Aurelia, Meriden, Cleghorn, Quimby and Washta this fall, while first-timers Bruce and Danae Dreckman will be covering their hometown of Marcus.

Bruce, as many people know, is a Major League Baseball umpire, so this is his "off season," and he volunteered to raise funds in Marcus.

The Needy Children's Fund activities will culminate in the annual Needy Children's Auction at the Brightside Lounge on Saturday, December 13, 2008.
