MANNING - The strong Galva-Holstein girls' cross country team won the first-ever Conference meet of the newly-organized Western Valley Conference, run here on Saturday October 18th.
The Lady Pirates scored 34 points, beating runner-up Woodbine by 40 points. The Lady Pirates were led by Ashley Drey's second place finish, in a time of 16:42.06 for the 4K race. Drey trailed fisrst-place Emily Schwery of Woodbine by less than six seconds. Galva-Holstein's Jessica Mathes was third, with a time of 16:46.11, and teammate Jayde Boyle placed fourth, in 16:46.80.
River Valley's Kaysi Byers placed seventh, with a time of 16:57.13, and Galva-Holstein's Breanna Mathes and Meg Kofmehl were 14th and 15th with times of 17:39.30 and 17:40.14, respectively. The Lady Pirates' Sarah Forristal placed 29th and Annie McAreavey was 36th. Jess Sievers of River Valley placed 49th.
In the Boys' varsity meet, Galva-Holstein's John Harris placed seventh, touring the 5K course in a time of 18:01.72. Teammate Josh Schwanz placed 34th, with a time of 19:26.74; Josh Mohr was 40th (19:49.40); Jamie Conlon was 51st (20:20.28); Riley Cosgrove was 60th (21:26.19) to close out G-H's scoring, and Kyle Wessling also ran for the Pirates.
As a team, the Pirates finished seventh, with 161 points. BC-IG took first with 48 points, followed by Woodbine, 69; Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto, 80; Logan-Magnolia, 97; and IKM-Manning, 123.
In JV competition, Galva-Holstein's Shelby Bennett placed 3rd in the 4K run, with a time of 20:06.67; Sarah Galvin was fifth, with a time of 20:32.92. Sofia Agrell, Kirstin Wessling
and Shelby Linton also ran for the G-H team, which finished second to BC-IG in the team competition.
The Boys' 5K JV run was dominated by Woodbine, which took five of the first six places. Galva-Holstein's Don Gebers broke up the pack by finishing 4th, with a time of 20:05.89. Tim Martin, Austin Bevers, Shelby Stevenson, Jon Klotz and Ethan Todd also ran for the Pirates.
Middle School boys and girls competed in a 3200 meter race, and Galva-Holstein's Rachel Hunt finished in 8th place, with a time of 15:12.02. Teammate Kate Mathes was 15th, in 16:28.47.
Gava-Holstein's Christian Egger (4th , 13:47.04) and Austin and Tyler Drey (10th, 11th; 14:20.12 and 14:21.12) competed in the Middle School Boys' 3200 meter run.
