On Sunday afternoon, October 19th, the youth of Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in rural Meriden held a Walk-A-Thon at the Washington High School track in Cherokee. The Walk-A-Thon was a fundraiser to raise money for "Operation Christmas Child, " a Christian international relief organization that provides Christmas gifts for needy children around the world.
Students from four area school districts - Cherokee, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, Aurelia and South O'Brien - as well as home schooled children, participated in the event.
The students collected pledges for each (quarter mile) lap they walked during a three hour period. Most students walked 8 to 10 miles, and the event raised $2,000, all of which will be used to purchase, pack, and ship Christmas gifts for children in poverty.
