G-H girls handle River Valley

Thursday, October 30, 2008

HOLSTEIN - The 12th-rated Galva-Holstein volleyball team pocketed a 3-0 sweep of River Valley in Class 1A Regional Tournament action here last week, claiming game scores of 25-13, 25-23, 25-15.

The victorious Pirates ran their match record to 25-12 with the win and kept moving down tourney trail in the process.

The winners totaled 80-92 hits with 36 kills, and served 66-72 for 92 percent. The team tallied 62 digs and 36 assists, along with 12 blocks.

Lindsey Joslin led in kills with 12, and Heather Joslin had 10. Lanae Broesder led in asssts with 29, and Heather Joslin led in serve aces with two. Ashley Buell led in digs with 17, and Heather Joslin registered 16.

"I'm not sure why, but we struggled with our serving in games one and two," said G-H coach Scott Mitchell. "We did a better job at the net blocking and getting our hands on balls. River Valley blocking and hitting pushed us in game two. I was glad to see the girls not get rattled."

Kristen Richey led the RV girls in serving with a 13-13 effort and two aces, while Amber Bauer was 11-11, Kari Ludvigson 7-7, and Andrea Nelson 7-7. Nelson also led in assists with 18.

Kaylea Simons led RV in attacks with 29-36 and six kills, followed by Bauer 14-19 and four kills, Ludvigson 10-10 and two kills, Richey 10-15 and five kills, and Tonya Johnson 9-15 and eight kills.

Charlee Brewer led the Wolverines in digs with 27, and Simons recorded eight. Johnson led in blocks with four, and Simons had three.

River Valley ends its season with an 11-22 match record, and a 39-54 game slate.

"This year did not go the way we wanted it to," said River Valley coach Marlene Baumann. "But the team never gave up and continued to improve each night out.

"We will lose five seniors - Amber Bauer, Kristen Richey, Andrea Nelson, Charlee Brewer, and Emily Todd. It will be hard to replace the desire and the never-give-up attitude they displayed all year. They are a great group of girls."
