MMC's Welp 4th in XC District

HOLSTEIN - The Class 1A District Cross Country meet was run on the Holstein Golf Course on October 27th, featuring 26 schools, and over 130 girls, competing in the girls' 4k.

Defending State Champion Council Bluffs St. Albert won the meet, followed by West Sioux of Hawarden. St. Albert, led by individual champion Abby Schlater, scored 36 points, followed by West Sioux (57), Galva-Holstein (74), Sioux Central (104) and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (163).

The Lady Pirates were led by Ashley Drey, Jayde Boyle and Jessica Mathes who finished 11th, 12th and 14th, respectively. The Lady Pirates' Breanna Mathes placed 20th and Meg Kofmehl finished 28th.

The MMC Lady Eagles, led by freshman Jeri Welp's 20:53, finished 16th in the team competition. Taryn Godberson, Christina Wilkens, Danica Hanson and Jill Addison also competed for MMC.

St. Albert also won the boys' team competition, scoring 50 points to top second place BC-IG, which scored 71. Galva-Holstein finished 6th with 187 points and South O'Brien was 7th, with 192 points.

More than 150 runners competed in the boys' 5k race, and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn sophomore Jay Welp finished 4th, just getting nipped at the finish, with a time of 17:10.77. Welp qualified for this weekend's State meet in Ft. Dodge. Galva-Holstein's John Harris took 10th place to make the State Meet, with a time of 17:41.80, and Reese Powers of South O'Brien finished 19th (18:16.58) while teammate Cole Pleggenkuhle was 29th, with a time of 18:35.63.

Other Galva-Holstein runners included Jamie Conlon, Collin Bubke, Josh Schwanz, Josh Mohr, Don Gebers and Riley Cosgrove.

Additional South O'Brien runners were Matt Cole, Dillen Zimmer, Kyle Kinck, Cody Ginger and Collin Scroeder.

MMC's freshman Jacob Pearson was 55th, with a time of 19:39.57, and German exchange student Gregor Pritzlaff and freshman Dustin Beck also ran for MMC, with Beck posting a season best time of 22:32.

The top 10 runners in both boys and girls divisions earn State Meet berths, as do the top three teams in each division. The all-class State Cross Country Meet is Saturday Nov. 1 at Fort Dodge.
