The 41st annual Northwest Iowa Junior High/Middle School Honor Band festival took place on the evening of Saturday, November 1, in the gymnasium at Storm Lake High School.
Approximately 425 7th and 8th grade musicians from 44 Northwest Iowa schools auditioned on October 18th for places in one of two equal bands. The two honor bands rehearsed during the day on Saturday before presenting their concert that evening.
Guest conductors for the bands were Dr. Larry Mitchell, retired Director of Bands at the University of South Dakota and Jay Nugent, instructor of instrumental music at Simpson College.
Among the area students who participated in the festival were Mariah Clyde and Jacob Witcombe from the Cherokee Middle School,on the bass clarinet and the B- flat clarinet, respectively; Galva-Holstein's Jayde Vondrak and Ashlynn Blenner, B-flat clarinet and Samantha Schoenher, bass clarinet; and South O'Brien's Kaitlyn Aberson, clarinet and Megan Burmakow, flute.
Aurelia, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and River Valley did not have any students audition for the Honor Band this year.
