Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Tyler Jones
Cherokee Washington High senior quarterback Tyler Jones, Iowa's prep career passing yardage record-holder, passed for 102 yards in a 44-20 Class 2A Substate loss to Orange City Unity Christian in Orange City on October 29th to push his final career total to 9,144 yards.

Jones also holds the state's career completion record with 756, the single season record for completions with 287, and the single game record for completions with 42, both set in the 2006 season.

Jones also has 81 career touchdown passes, which now makes him the state's career record holder in that category. Former University of Iowa QB Matt Sherman had the state record of 77 TD passes while playing for St. Ansgar in 1989-92.

James Vandenberg of Keokuk, a redshirt freshman at the University of Iowa this fall, held the career passing yards mark with 7,701 yards heading into this season. Jones broke the record last year, but it was regained by Vandenberg after Keokuk played four additional games by earning a spot in the 2007 playoffs and then running the table to win the Class 3A championship.
