LAKE CITY - Southern Cal, Iowa's third-rated Class A football team, smacked Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn 42-14 in Substate action here last week.
Mustang running back Eric Vogel rushed 12 times for 221 yards and scored four touchdowns on runs of 25, 68, one, and 11 yards to lead the potent 9-1 Mustangs to their victory.
Southern Cal scored 20 points in the first quarter and then tallied one TD in each remaining period to mount a 42-0 lead, before the MMC Eagles got on the scoreboard with two touchdown runs from Lukas Nelson in the final 2:26. Nelson, the Eagles' quarterback, scored on a run of 19 yards, and then from his defensive position, returned a fumble recovery 60 yards to paydirt.
MMC rushed 26 times for 118 yards in the game, with Nelson leading the way with 18 carries for 64 yards. Jacob Lehnhoff carried it six times for 59 yards. Nelson completed 9-17 passes for 52 yards, with two interceptions. Jerad Letsche led the Eagle receivers with five catches for 38 yards.
Southern Cal rushed 33 times for 340 yards, and was 5-9 passing for 37 yards and one interception.
The Mustangs tallied 16 first downs and MMC 10. Each team lost a fumble and the Eagles cause was hurt following an 0-9 effort on third down.
Letsche led the MMC defense with 14 tackles, followed by Blaine Dammann 11, Jordan Petersen nine, Blake Erdman nine, Alex Roseen eight, Nelson five, and Kyle Wester five.
MMC finishes its season with a 3-7 record.
