Nelson sets XC record; qualifies for Nationals

SIOUX CITY - Kara Nelson, a sophomore from Cherokee, ran the fastest women's cross country time in Morningside College history to lead the Mustangs to a third-place finish at the recent University of South Dakota Graphic Edge Invitational here.

Nelson ran the 5K course in 18:24 to finish third in the individual standings. Her time broke the previous Morningside record of 18:29 Nelson ran earllier this season at the South Dakota State University Invitational.

A Cherokee Washington High graduate and former state champion in the 3,000 meters, Nelson is the daughter of Jim and Sue Nelson of Cherokee.

In the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Championships Saturday in Hastings, Neb., Nelson qualified for the upcoming NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championships with a third-place finish in the 5K race in a time of 18:25.35.

The NAIA Cross Country National Championships will be held Nov. 22 in Kenosha, Wisc. and will be Nelson's second consecutive trip to the Nationals.
