9 Braves earn All-District football honors

Impressive 13 players are All-Academic

The Cherokee Braves 2008 football squad was honored at its annual post-season banquet on Nov. 11th, with those players earning All-District, All-Academic, and varsity letters recognized.

Seven Braves earned Class 2A All-District first-team honors, and two more were named second-team All-District. Two other Braves received All-District honorable mention status.

Thirty-two Braves received 2008 varsity letters at the Cherokee football team's annual post-season banquet, held on Nov. 11th at Western Iowa Tech Community College Conference Center in Cherokee. Earning first team honors on offense were senior quarterback Tyler Jones, senior running back Kyle Schuett, junior receiver Kyle Schuck, and senior lineman Keaton Tuttle. Named to the first team on defense were senior linebacker Tyler Lundsgaard, and senior defensive lineman Matt Koch. Junior Matt Pitts was All-District first team as the kicker.

Two Braves were named to the All-District second team, including junior receiver Nick Parker, and senior linebacker Luke Pearson.

Receiving All-District honorable mention for Cherokee were senior linebackers Derek Scott, and Nathan Carlson.

An impressive number of Braves earned District 2 All-Academic honors, including Koch, Schuett, Brandon Henke, Steve Veit, Philip Bieber, Tony Hunt, Tom Weaver, Lundsgaard, Scott, Parker, Cory Bryant, Nolan Sampson, and Dan Bieber.

Besides all of those already listed, the remaining 2008 Cherokee varsity letter winners included Richie Schmidt, Dillon Devitt, Tyler White, Kody Riggs, Cutter Carlson, Jeremy Werthman, Mitch Sangl, Jon Hunt, Eric Van Voorst, Scott Long, Gordy Gill, Pat Loughlin, Cody Stowater, Nick Keith, Shane Bush, Zach Woods, Justin Long, and Brock Dagel.

For Class 2A District 2, Okoboji senior Max Burgeson was the Offensive MVP, and Pocahontas Area/P-P senior Kendall Sommerlot was Defensive MVP. PAC/P-P senior Cody Harrison was Special Teams Player of Year, and East Sac County senior Drew McDonough was first team punter. District champion Okoboji coach Travis Schipper was Coach of the Year.
