MARCUS - If you are looking for a chance to truly show your "Christmas Spirit" this year, please consider the following.

Dan Schwarz is a 52 year-old Marcus resident, one of nine children of Alvira and the late Marvin Schwarz of Marcus. Dan, an employee at Tyson Foods in Cherokee, suffered a stroke on September 8, 2008 and was airlifted to Sioux City's Mercy Medical Center. After seven days in the Intensive Care Unit at Mercy, followed by 2-3 days in the Stroke Unit, he was transferred to the Rehablitation Unit.

Dan remained at Mercy Hospital until October 13, when he was transferred for long-term rehabilitation services to the Quality Living facility in Omaha, where he remains. The stroke has affected the right side of his body, and he now walks with a cane.

As you can imagine, the treatment and rehabilitation services which Dan Schwarz has received over the last three months cost a considerable amount. With that in mind, a series of "Holiday Fundraiser Open House" events have been scheduled to help Dan pay his medical bills.

The first Open House will be held from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m Saturday at the home of Dan's brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Cindy Schwarz, at 207 N. Radcliffe Ave. in Marcus (northeast of the Casey's store). Coffee and refreshments will be served. Additional Open Houses will be held at the same location and time of day on Saturday, December 13 and Saturday, December 20.

If you are not able to make it on any of those dates, but still want to help out financially, you may mail a donation to Dan's mother, Alvira Schwarz, at 613 Highway 3, Marcus, IA 51035.
