REMSEN - A fierce second-half rally came up short for the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys here on Dec. 2, as the Eagles dropped a 71-61 season opener at Remsen-Union.
MMC senior Jordan Boekhout scored 30 points in the second half to lead the Eagles to within five points with just under two minutes left to play, before the host Rockets coverted their foul shots down the stretch to ice the game away as the Eagles were forced to foul to regain ball possession.
R-U led 10-4 after the first quarter, and took a 26-15 lead in at halftime. The Eagle cause was hurt as starter Will Hanson was whistled with his second foul at the start of the second period and sat out the remainder of the first half.
The offenses began to warm up in the third quarter and the Rockets eased into a 42-29 lead before Boekhout, Neal Bunt, Lukas Nelson, and Hanson hit some big shots to rally the Eagles in the exciting finish.
Boekhout led all scorers with 37 points, while Bunt added 10, and Nelson six.
"I was very pleased with the way our boys rebounded," said first-year MMC coach Pat Bird. "R-U is taller on average than our team and they have a couple husky boys to boot. I thought our guys held their ground against them throughout the game. I would especially like to single out our three seniors - Boekhout, Nelson, and Kyle Wester for working together on blocking out.
"Sophomore John Hoefling, coming off the bench to spell our guys who were in foul trouble, also did a fine job of rebounding."
