The 2009 Cherokee Jazz and Blues Festival concluded on Friday Jan. 16 with the annual Jazz Clinic for area Middle School and High School Jazz Bands.

Veteran jaz trumpeter Jim Oatts of Des Moines and the other members of the Jim Oatts Quintet worked with jazz students and instructors from the Storm Lake, Kingsley-Pierson, East Sac County and Cherokee schools at the Cherokee Middle School.

The event, one of the educational highlights of Cherokee's annual jazz event, is usually held during the Jazz and Blues Festival, but had to be delayed a week this year due to scheduling problems. Nevertheless, thanks to Oatts and his band members, it was again a highlight for several area music students and their directors.
