Elaine J. Smith, 88, of Cherokee died on Jan. 18, 2009 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 23 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial was in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cherokee. Greenwood Funeral Home of Cherokee was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Elaine was born on Sept. 30, 1920 in rural Larrabee to Vern and Theresa (Collister) Alexander. She graduated from Larrabee High School in 1937, then attended Business School in Sioux City. On April 6, 1942, she married Dale Smith in Cherokee. Elaine worked at the Cherokee State Bank as a teller and also worked at the ASCS office. She was a 4-H Leader and also clerked at the Cherokee Sale Barn. Elaine enjoyed the craft building at the Cherokee County Fair, and liked baking and canning, playing the piano, and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; a daughter, Patricia Kniss (1979); and a brother, Neil Alexander (2007).

She is survived by three sons, Jim Smith and his friend, Polly Angstead, of Scotland, S.D.; Jerry Smith and his wife, Linda, of Cherokee; and Doug Smith and his wife, Judy, of Cherokee; a brother, Lorn Alexander and his wife, Norma, of Sutherland; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
