REMSEN - Opportunistic Jordan Boekhout drove to the basket with 2.5 seconds left in the game and made the shot to lead Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn to a thrilling 48-46 victory over Remsen St. Mary's in War Eagle Conference basketball action here on Jan. 16th.
MMC led 27-17 at halftime but the feisty Hawks whittled away at that deficit throughout the second half and took the lead at 41-40 with two minutes left to play. The score was tied at 46-46 with 20 seconds left and the Eagles with the ball. They worked the ball around and finally got it to Boekhout, their leading scorer, who obviously knew what to do with it.
Boekhout led all scorers with 24 points, and Will Hanson added 11. Tanner Kockler paced Remsen St. Mary's with 16 points, and Skyler Higgins chipped in 13.
The host Hawks used a distinct advantage at the free throw line to stay in the game, connecting on 14-30, compared to just 3-7 for the Eagles.
"We built a 10-point lead at halftime by working the ball well against their zone, and hitting some outside shots, including two three-pointers by Tyrel Godbersen in the second quarter," said MMC coach Pat Bird.
"On our first two possessions of the second half we had great looks at the basket, but the shots didn't fall. Remsen St. Mary's then came down and made a three and the momentum began to change. But at the end we got the ball to Boekhout and he took it to the basket for the winning shot.
"After the game, I told the boys that it may not have been pretty, but it ws a conference win on the road, so we'll take it."
