The River Valley boys won two Western Valley Conference games over the weekend of Jan. 16-17
On Friday, the Wolverines, according to their coach, Dean Norris, "played our best game of the year," in beating Class 2A Westwood (8-2) by a 49-35 score in Correctionville.
Coach Norris said that defense was the key to the game, as RV held the Rebels to just nine points in the first half.
Zach Hulinger and Austin Hansen each scored 14 to lead the Wolverines' scoring, and Hansen added five assists. Norris said that Anthony Volkert had a " huge" night on the boards, grabbing 12 rebounds, while Sam Lundt had four steals and Ethan Todd blocked three shots in "a great team win."
Against Kingsley-Pierson on Saturday, the team "came out very flat after the big win" on Friday, according to Coach Norris, and they had to rally from a first quarter deficit to gain a 65-45 victory.
Sam Lundt scored 21 points, Austin Hansen 16, Anthony Volkert 14, and Ethan Todd 12, as the Wolverines again demonstrated good scoring balance.
Todd led in the team in rebounding with 12, for a double/double, while Volkert also had a double/double, with 10 boards.
Austin Hansen and Zach Hullinger dished out five assists apiece, as RV passed the ball much better in the second half, according to Coach Norris. Sam Lundt had four steals on defense, and, said Norris, "a big key to the game was Scott O' Connell, who came off the bench and provided a spark by pulling down seven rebounds.
