Pirates run record to 13-1 in 2 OT

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

HOLSTEIN - The Galva-Holstein Pirates are one of the top-rated Class 1A teams in Northwest Iowa, but they needed a maximum effort to achieve their 13th victory in 14 games on Jan. 20, when they faced off against a tough Westwood team in Western Valley Conference basketball action here.

The Rebels jumped off to a five-point lead after the first quarter and still clung to a one-point advantage at halftime. G-H had crept ahead, 41-38 after three, but regulation ended in a 58-58 tie, and it was still knotted at 64 after the first OT. The Pirates prevailed in the second overtime, winning by the slimmest of margins, 70-69, when Jordan Else sank two free throws with six seconds remaining.

Pirate coach Bob Lee said, "This was an exciting game against a very good team. We're proud of how our guys stuck together down the stretch and did the things we needed to do to get the win."

Taylor Nees led the Pirates with 22 points, 14 rebounds and two steals, while Mark Cronin scored 13, grabbed eight rebounds, and stole an amazing six errant Rebel passes. Isaiah Miler added 12 points for G-H.

Michael Gallagher scored 23 points for Westwood, whose season mark slipped to 9-3. Kody Gillaspie chipped in with 14 points and Greg Scott scored 12 for the Rebels.
