HOLSTEIN - The Galva-Holstein Pirates are one of the top-rated Class 1A teams in Northwest Iowa, but they needed a maximum effort to achieve their 13th victory in 14 games on Jan. 20, when they faced off against a tough Westwood team in Western Valley Conference basketball action here.
The Rebels jumped off to a five-point lead after the first quarter and still clung to a one-point advantage at halftime. G-H had crept ahead, 41-38 after three, but regulation ended in a 58-58 tie, and it was still knotted at 64 after the first OT. The Pirates prevailed in the second overtime, winning by the slimmest of margins, 70-69, when Jordan Else sank two free throws with six seconds remaining.
Pirate coach Bob Lee said, "This was an exciting game against a very good team. We're proud of how our guys stuck together down the stretch and did the things we needed to do to get the win."
