'Beauty of Northwest Iowa' photo winners announced

David Moore of LeMars submitted two winning photographs at the recent Beauty of Northwest Iowa photo contest at the Sanford Museum. "Country Winter Sunset" (left) was named the winner of the Amateur division, and "Forgotten Farm" (right) was one of the photos selected to be displayed at the Cherokee Community Center.
The Tiel Sanford Museum in Cherokee had photographs depicting "The Beauty of Northwest Iowa" on display in their West Gallery throughout the month of January.

Dr. Bruce Ellingson, professor of Media Studies at Buena Vista University, and Gary Fandel, a photojournalist from Des Moines, judged the photographs submitted by both amateur and professional area photographers, and the judges announced their awards at the Museum on Saturday evening, January 10. Monetary prizes were awarded to first, second and third place winners in both the amateur and professional categories.

Dave Ellis, Director of Cherokee Parks and Recreation, also chose eight photos from the display that he would like to hang temporarily at the Cherokee Community Center, and will contact the artists for their permission to do so.

First place in the Amateur category was awarded to David Moore of Le Mars for his photo "Country Winter Sunset;" second place went to Connie Gilmore of Linn Grove for "Frost Flora;" and third place was awarded to Alexandra Bailey of Pierson for "Bird Tracks."

Professional division winners - "Orange Sky" (left) and "VFW Statue (right) by Mike Leckband were named winners in the Professional category.
Honorable mentions went to Diane Radack's "Scene at the Fossil and Prairie Park" and Jaden Lux for "Sunfish from the Lakes."

In the professional category, The Chronicle Times' Mike Leckband of Calumet took first place with "VFW Statue" and second place, with "Orange Sky."
