GRANVILLE - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls led 24-16 at halftime, and 33-27 after three quarters on the way to a hard-fought 49-40 victory over Granville Spalding here on Jan. 29.
Erica Dreckman led the Lady Eagles with 15 points, whil Kayla Foresman tallied 14, and Jen Mittelstadt nine. Foresman also pulled down 12 rebounds for a sweet double-double performance.
Dreckman, Kelsey Sears, and Jalyn Doeden each pocketed five rebounds. Dreckman had an uncanny defensive performance with a whopping nine steals, and Rachel McDermott had an equally stunning offensive performance with nine assists.
"This was one of those nights that our two starting freshmen, Erica and Kayla, carried our team," said MMC coach Shane Williams. "Erica had an amazing defensive effort, played at a high level, and gave our team great energy. Kayla had an outstanding game on the boards and really took over the game offensively late in the fourth quarter after they had tied it at 37-37. We finished on a 12-3 scoring run when it mattered most.
"Our inexperience has us having difficulty putting someone away. We tend to settle. You can't allow a team to hang around - especially on the road."
