HOLSTEIN - The Galva-Holstein boys basketball team "played a real good first half" against Remsen-Union here on Feb. 2, in Western Valley Conference tournament action. But, said Pirate coach Bob Lee, his team "got a little complacent in the second half." As a result, the Rockets outscored the Pirates 26-11 in the fourth quarter and R-U fought real hard to get back in the game, and then extend it to overtime.
In the extra period, said Lee, "We made the plays we needed to get the win." The final score read Galva-Holstein 60, Remsen-Union 59.
Taylor Nees had another big game for the Pirates, scoring 21 points, grabbing 16 rebounds, dishing out five assists, and stealing four misguided Rocket missiles. The reliable Mark Cronin added 13 points and five rebounds for G-H, whose record now stands at 17-2.
Remsen-Union had three players score in double figures - Colin Sonnichsen led the team with 18 points, while Ryan Schroeder added 15 and Kraig Alesch chipped in with 12.
The win allowed the Pirates to advance to the second round of the WVC Tournament, where they played River Valley on Feb. 3 at Ida Grove. The two teams met just last Friday, and G-H edged the Wolverines, 68-62, on that occasion.
