CORRECTIONVILLE - The River Valley boys advanced in the first round of the Western Valley Conference Tournament on Feb. 2, with a close one-point verdict over Westwood.
Ethan Todd made a basket after an offensive rebound in the closing seconds, and RV was then able to defend a last-second jump shot at the buzzer to gain the 50-49 victory.
RV coach Dean Norris said, " Team defense was the key, as we trailed at half-time and were able to hold a very talented Westwood team to 19 points in the second half."
Austin Hansen led the Wolverine scoring with 17, while Zach Hullinger added 13. Anthony Volkert pulled down 10 rebounds, and Ethan Todd had six rebounds, two blocks and played a good defensive game. Hansen also pocketed six rebounds.
Austin Hansen guarded Westwood's top scorer for much of the second half and limited him to just three points, according to Norris.
Sam Lundt and Zach Hullinger each had four assists, and Lundt also had three steals, as RV "continues to play very good team basketball," said Norris.
The Wolverines notched 24-51 field goals for 47 percent, and cashed in 7-8 free throws.
