IDA GROVE - The Galva-Holstein Pirates broke open a tight contest in the second half, and went on to beat River Valley, 64-49, in Western Valley Conference Tournament action here on Feb. 3.
Galva-Holstein boys basketball coach Bob Lee said his team "did a real nice job of spreading the ball around tonight. Our defense stepped up in the second half, and was really the difference in the game for us."
The Pirates shot 56% from the field and 74% from the line, and were led by Taylor Nees, who had 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and blocked three shots. Isaiah Miller scored 12 points, had three steals, four assists, and six rebounds, and point guard Jordan Else also scored in double figures, with 10 points, and added five steals and four assists,
Anthony Volkert scored 21 and Austin Hansen 20 to lead the River Valley attack.
Volkert also led the Wolverines in rebounds with 10, while Ethan Todd grabbed six, and Hansen five. Sam Lundt and Hansen led RV in assists with four apiece, and Hansen and Volkert had four steals each.
With their win, Galva-Holstein, now 16-2, advanced to the tournament semi-final game against ranked Battle Creek-Ida Grove here on Feb. 6.
