IDA GROVE - The big guys battled here on Feb. 6, when the 16-2 Galva-Holstein Pirates took on the 15-1 Battle Creek-Ida Grove Falcons in the semi-final game of the first Western Valley Conference tournament.
Coach Bob Lee's Pirate team "played three real good quarters," according to the coach, "and ran out of steam in the fourth quarter."
Indeed, G-H held a 43-28 lead heading into that final quarter, then were outscored by BC-IG, 35-14, in the fourth, leading to a 63-57 BC-IG victory.
Taylor Nees led Galva-Holstein with 23 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, three assists and a blocked shot, and was joined in double figure scoring by Patrick McAreavy with 13 points and Cole Egger with 11.
BC-IG also had three players in double figures, led by Zak Renze's 20 points. Alex Warnke, with 14 points, and Cole Boger, with 11, were the others.
Coach Lee said, "BC-IG is a great team and made some big plays in the 4th quarter." G-H played well at times, too. Said Lee, "Our defense had some big moments throughout the game, and caused several turnovers."
