Seven area grapplers make state

At the Feb.14th District Wrestling Tournaments in Cherokee and Sioux Center, seven wrestlers from the Chronicle Times coverage area qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn will send four of their veterans, three of whom have earned more than 100 career victories, on to the Class 1A Big Show in Des Moines, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday.

Senior Jacob Lenhoff (35-5) earned his trip by finishing as runner-up in the 140-pound class at Sioux Center ; junior Ross Godberson (37-1) was the 145-pound champion; Senior Jerad Letsche (38-3) was the 152-pound champion; and Blaine Damman (33-11) was the 160-pound runner-up.

Lehnhoff beat James Finch of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 3-2, and lost to Curtis Hayes of Sioux Center 5-0; Godbersen pinned John Estep of George-Little Rock in 2:29, and then beat Michael Hensen of Graettinger-Terril 4-2 in overtime; Letsche pinned Gabe Doornink of Sioux Center in :39, and then beat Sean Bainbridge of Kingsley-Pierson 17-2; and Dammann was pinned by Joe Sievert of Akron-Westfield in 2:29, and then pinned Dylan Reynolds of Central Lyon in 3:46, and beat Kass Schany of G-T 10-5.

Class 1A first-round matches in Des Moines are today.

Area first-round 1A matchups at state will be : 140 - Lenhoff vs. Drake Fanslau, Underwood freshman (38-8); 145 - Godberson vs. Tim Moroney, East Buchanan junior (32-6); 152 - Letsche vs. sophomore Tyler Ogburn of Corning (34-14); and 160 - Dammann vs. Dylan Schrader, Wapello junior (27-2).

The Aurelia/Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland wrestling team will send one wrestler on to the state tournament this week at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Junior Taylor Witzel, 160, won his weight class at Saturday's Class 2A District Tournament at Cherokee, defeating Tanner Mathews of Sheldon/South O'Brien, 6-2, in the first round, and Jeremy Hemer of Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove by a 7-3 score in the finals. Hemer (40-13) advanced to the state tournament also. Witzel takes a 45-8 record to State.

AGHSC coach Scott Phelps said that "Taylor wrestled very well and stayed with his style. The coaches were very proud of his effort."

AGHSC's two other District competitors did not fare as well. Sophomore Vance Kreutz (37-16), at 112, lost two close matches and freshman Logan Schafer (285) (21-20) also came up short. The coaches feel, however, that the experience these two young wrestlers gained will benefit them both next year.

Sheldon/South O'Brien sent two wrestlers on to State. Junior Knute Klinker (37-8) was runner-up in the 152-pound weight class, and Junior Pete Matthews (40-8) won the 189-pound championship.

Klinker beat Tyler Down (39-8) of OA/BCIG 7-6 in his opening match Saturday, and then lost 8-2 to Ted Kruger (42-8) of Sibley-Ocheyedan in the finals. Matthews pinned Sioux City Heelan's Alex Flores (22-26) in 2:56, and then pinned Micah Hoogendoorn (29-19) of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in 2:45 in the finals.

AGHSC's Witzel (45-8) will wrestle Tyler Craig of Mt. Vernon (28-10) in his first-round match at State on Thursday; S/SOS's Klinker (37-8) wrestles South Tama County sophomore Kyle Lux (30-3); and S/SOS's Mathews (40-8) wrestles Central Springs sophomore Andrew Nodtvedt (35-8).

Cherokee qualified three for the Districts but didn't advance anyone to State, including Calvin Conley at 152, Tyler Lundsgaard at 171, and Dustin Rosewall at 215.

Conley (27-20) lost 7-0 to Kruger in his opening match, and then lost 12-3 to Down in the consolation. Lundsgaard lost 16-1 to eventual champion Brian Block (46-1) of Sibley-Ocheyedan, and then lost by fall in 3:21 to Bruce McWilliams (41-5) of S-SOS. Rosewall was pinned in 1:30 by eventual champ Taylor Whitt (37-3) of MOC-Floyd Valley, and lost a narrow 4-3 decision to Tanner Thompson (24-25) of OA-BCIG.

"It was a tough day for us," sid Cherokee coach Jason Wood. "Calvin, Tyler, and Dustin truly gave it their all. Calvin was in a very close match in the first round just down two points in the second. I am very proud of all my wrestlers this year. I look forward to watching them improve next season. Thanks to all you wrestling fans for your support."
