Mark Carlson (left) accepts $2 from a cleanly shaven Art Lemley in payment for a shaving permit button. A Beard Growing Contest was held in conjunction with Cherokee's 125th anniversary in 1981. The Cherokee Lions Club coordinated the contest and sold two kinds of buttons -- one for those in the process of growing a beard, and the shaving permit button for $2 for those not wanting to grow a beard. Proceeds form the button sale went to the local club to purchase playground equipment for Spring Lake Park.
