Road ends for Dammann, Witzel, Klinker, Matthews

DES MOINES - Russ Godbersen and Jerad Letsche of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn won their opening matches at the Class 1A Iowa State Wrestling Tournament here on Feb. 18th, to move into Thursday night's quarter finals.

Their teammate, Jacob Lehnhoff, lost his first match at 140 pounds, but won his first-round consolation match to stay alive and advance to Thursday night's second-round consolations.

MMC's Blaine Dammann lost his first match ,and then lost in the first-round consolations to end his tourney quest.

In Class 2A, Sheldon-South O'Brien's Knute Klinker and Pete Matthews also lost their first two matches to end their tourney action, as did Tayor Witzel of Aurelia/Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland.

Godbersen, a junior (38-1), beat junior Tim Maroney (32-7) of East Buchanan Winthrop 8-0 at 145 pounds in his opening match. He met senior Jesse Brown (39-5) of Nashua Plainfield in Thursday night's championship quarterfinals.

Letsche, a senior (39-4), beat sophomore Tyler Ogburn (34-15) of Corning

13-5 in hs first match. He met senior Kolton Kersten (36-7) of Logan-Magnolia Thursday night in championship quarterfinals.

Lehnhoff, a senior (35-6), lost a tight 6-4 match in overtime to freshman Drake Fanslau (39-8) of Underwood in his opener, and then came back with a 7-4 decision over freshman Andy Glaser (12-7) of Nashua Plainfeld in consolations. He met junior Brandon Smith (38-7) of BGM Brooklyn in Thursday night's second-round consolations.

Dammann, a senior (33-13), was pinned by junior Dylan Schrader (28-2) of Wapello in 1:06 in his opener, and then lost a narrow 4-3 decision to senior Dustin Rholl (31-5) of South Hamilton-Jewell.

AGHSC junior Taylor Witzel (45-9) lost a narrow 4-2 match to senior Tyler Craig (29-10) of Mount Vernon in his opener, and then was pinned by senior Keaton Mathis (31-9) of Roland-Story in :53 in first-round consolations.

Klinker, a Sheldon-South O'Brien junior (36-9) was pinned by sophomore Kyle Lux of South Tama (31-3) in 1:44 in his opener in 2A, and then lost by technical fall 19-4 in 5:39 to senior Noah Minikus (40-11) of Denver-Tripoli in the first-round consolations.

Matthews, an S-SOS junior (40-9), was pinned by sophomore Andrew Nodtvedt (36-8) of Central Springs in 2:56, and then was pinned by senior Casey Kreiter (36-4) of Central Clinton-Dewitt in 2:46.

The Class 1A semifinals and third-round consolation matches are Feb. 20 f, to be followed by the 2A semifinals and third-round consolation matches.

The all-class consolation place matches are noon to 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 21, and the Grand March and championship matches begin at 6 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
