J. Romaine Ryan
J. Romaine Ryan, 91, of Cherokee, died on Feb. 20, 2009 at Cherokee Regional Medical Center, Cherokee following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 24, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial was in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee. Funeral arrangements were made Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Romaine was born on Nov. 13, 1917 in Varina to William J. and Nell (Carey) Ryan. He attended school in Varina at St. Columbkille Parochial School, and graduated in 1936. In April of 1941, he entered the U.S. Army, and was a veteran of World War II who was discharged in October of 1945.

Following his military service, Roman moved to Fonda, where he worked in the petroleum business for seven years. On Aug. 17, 1946, he married Joanne Wright in Storm Lake.

The couple lived in California for a brief period of time until Romaine and Joanne moved to Cherokee, where he worked in the petroleum business for 39 years, retiring in 1988.

Romaine was involved in many organizations; the Knights of Columbus in which he was the Past Grand Knight, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. He was also a charter member of the Lions Club, A.R.C., and the Work Activity Center.

Romaine was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and his wife, Joanne, on March 10, 1991; he is survived by a son, Bill Ryan of Plano, Texas; a daughter, Mary Pat Peters and her husband, Larry, of Plano, Texas; a son, Tim Ryan of Plano, Texas; grandsons John Peters and his wife, Katie, of Ladera Ranch, Calif. and Ryan Peters and his wife, Suzanne, of Norman, Olka.; a granddaughter, Nicki Elibary and her husband, Wally, of McKinney, Texas and two great-grandchildren.
