This year the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce Rodeo Committee and Barnes/MJM Rodeos will hold the annual Cherokee PRCA Rodeo May 28 to May 30 starting at 7:30 P.M. nightly.

As tradition has been, kid's night will be held Thursday evening with kids ages 12 and under free with an adult ticket purchase. Adult tickets Thursday evening will be available in advance for $10 or $12 at the gate the night of the show. There will be various kid games, free pony rides and a petting zoo for the kids to enjoy starting at 5:30 P.M.

American Idol singing sensation Shawn Mayer, formerly of May City, will be making an appearance Friday evening after the rodeo to sing some of her country hits. The new country star has spent the last year opening for star acts like John Michael Montgomery and One Trick Pony.

Tickets for the rodeo Friday evening include the price of the show and are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. Kids (12 and under) are $5 in advance and $10 at the gate with kids under 3 getting in for free. There will also be kid's activities available Friday evening for a minimal fee.

Saturday, from approximately 11:30 A.M. to 1 P.M. there will be a train robbery re-enactment at The Depot and as tradition, there will be a parade starting at 4 P.M. with its route beginning at the high school.

Saturday night will be Queens Night with Miss Rodeo Iowa and Miss Teen Rodeo in attendance along with Miss Cherokee Rodeo Jessica Rausch. All three queens will be on hand to sign autographs and answer kid's questions during the evening.

The 2009 Miss Rodeo Cherokee will be crowned at 6:30 right before the start of the rodeo. Tickets for Saturday nights showing will be $12 in advance and $15 at the gate for adults and $5 in advance and $7 at the gate for kids. There will also be rodeo and western vendors on hand all three nights.

"It's a great way to get that many people into town in one weekend," said Val Cedar, co-chair of the Cherokee Rodeo Committee. "We almost double the population."

Last year's event was profitable for the committee bringing 4,500 people out in three days. The committee is hoping with a star like Shawn Mayer coming to town to greatly enlarge the attendance numbers this year.
