Holzhauer Motors LTD. of Cherokee has acquired the right to sell and service Chevrolet and Buick in Cherokee.

Holzhauer Motors, 1601 N. 2nd St., entered into a Sales & Service Agreement with General Motors on March 11, following the recent closing of Brown Chevrolet and Buick Company in Cherokee, the longtime Chevrolet and Buick dealership at 1200 S. 2nd St.

"This is not a franchise agreement, but an agreement for us to sell and service Chevrolet and Buick in Cherokee," said Dan Winchell, principal owner of Holzhauer Motors.

Holzhauer Motors is the longtime Cherokee dealer for a lineup that includes Pontiac, GMC, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep, and now adds Chevrolet and Buick, along with GMC, Chevrolet, and Dodge pick-up trucks.

Winchell said he pursued the Sales and Service Agreement with GM to ensure that there would remain a Cheverolet and Buick dealer in Cherokee County. "If we didn't step up, Cherokee County would be without a Chevy and Buick franchise," explained Winchell. "Because of the national economy, there's a lot of small-town dealers forced to make changes or going out of business altogether," said Winchell.

Winchell said that nine former Brown Chevrolet and Buick employees were invited to apply at Holzhauer's and that four applied and three were hired at this time.

Winchell also purchased the former Brown's Chevrolet and Buick facility and is in the process of finding a renter for it. There has been some interest shown in it, added Winchell.

Along with the change, Holzhauer's is soon planning an expansion project at its location to better accomodate the Cheverolet and Buick business. Winchell said he will add two new bays for service work, and two new bays for vehicle reconditioning associated with his body shop.

Holzhauer's also has three used car stores in Northwest Iowa - Lawton Motors, Milford Motors, and Chris Feller Sales in Remsen.

A majority of the service work and reconditioning for all four facililties is funneled through Cherokee, explained Winchell.

Holzhauer's currently employs 32 full-time employees, and eight part-time employees.
