Spotlight 4-H

Friday, March 27, 2009

Ahoy Mateys!

OK everybody, check your calendar. Think back to that cold, gloomy day in February when that dreadful little groundhog, Puxetauny Phil, saw his shadow and made the prediction for 6 more weeks of winter. Well folks, those 6 weeks are about over and it's time to turn our thoughts to SPRING! But, here at the office, we are taking things one step farther. Let's talk summer.

Ah, summer just the thought of it. Can you feel the warmth and the sunshine on your face? What do you smell, the fragrance of beautiful flowers, how about the neighbor's grill? That's what we are talking about. We just can't wait. But now is the time to make your plans for the summer.

Summer is a time to help your child build wonderful memories. It is also a time for them to make new friends and to have new experiences. That is where this 4-H experience comes into play. First let me preface by saying you do not need to be enrolled in 4-H to participate in this activity.

Every June, over 1,000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities.

If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H! You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the state. You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show!

If you have a specific interest in either animal science or crop production, you might want to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP or CSI: Crops tracks!

What is ROUND-UP and CSI: Crops you may ask? Well Animal Science ROUND-UP includes specialized workshops focusing on beef, sheep, swine, dairy, dairy goat, and horse. You will learn new animal agriculture technologies and be introduced to career opportunities in animal agriculture. CSI: Crops includes specialized workshops focusing on agronomy and its many facets. You will find out about GMO's, GPS, FEEL, ELISA, and DNA. You will conduct a plant crime scene investigation to solve insect, disease, weed, and plant growth problems.

The dates for this State Youth Conference are June 30th thru July 2nd. The registration deadline is May 22nd. For more information, contact Brenda Medick at the Extension Office, 712-225-6196.

The theme for this year's conference is "Voyage to Greatness". Now is the time to embark on your own voyage to greatness. So gather your friends and the more 1,000 other "scalawags" at the 2009 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference. (Somehow I think by the brochure we have been provided, it seems to be a "pirate" theme).

Until next week . . .
