WITCC hosts Spring 2009 Community Education Classes

Western Iowa Tech Community College in Cherokee is again hosting an interesting and exciting line-up of Community Education Classes for area residents.

The classes have proven very popular in the past few years and this year WITCC is offering seven diverse Community Education Classes, including Hello Cupcake!; Digital Photography-Capturing Vacation Memories; Bow-Wow Etiquette Revisited; Beading Basics and Beyond; Spring Greetings; Beer Sampling; and Microsoft Word For Beginners.

Registration is limited. To register, call 225-0238, or stop in at WITCC on Victory Drive in North Cherokee.

Hello Cupcake!

Cupcakes are a great way to enjoy cake on a small scale! Lori Reusch from Hy-Vee will teach you how to decorate cupcakes with spring and birthday themes. Included in the class will be the tools needed to create all your masterpieces. Attend the class, have fun, and leave with six decorated cupcakes to enjoy right away and fun ideas for all of your spring and summer get-togethers. Sign up early to reserve your spot. Class is limited to 15.

Digital Photography: Capturing Vacation Memories

Doug Pierson, Master Photographer, of Pierson Photography will be the instructor of this class for the beginning and developing digital photographer. The first session will be explaining settings and setup of each student's own camera and instruction on how to take digital photos. Doug will also be discussing strategies on how to capture vacation memories on your camera. He will answer questions on dealing with outdoor lighting, capturing movement and creating that breathtaking background. The second session will be spent looking at the pictures taken and giving constructive criticism of the photos and suggestions on how to improve quality. Class is limited to 15.

Bow Wow Etiquette Revisited

Spring is here and that means you and your canine friends need to be ready for some time in the outdoors. Are you ready to socialize with other canines? Val Cedar is ready to help you and your favorite dog learn and review basic behavior training. She will cover controlled walking and basic commands such as sit, stay and lay down. Val will also review some basic grooming issues including fur care, teeth cleaning, eye matter and nail care. Students will need to bring a collar and leash for all four-legged friends. Come and join other dog lovers and socialize your dog. If the weather cooperates, plan for some outdoor activities.

Three sessions: Wednesdays, April 8, 15 and 22; 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Beading Basics and Beyond

Ready to tackle a new beading challenge? Instructor Dori Claycamp has exciting new ideas to help you make a multiple-strand necklace in the color scheme of your choice. She will review basic techniques and quickly move on to assisting students in their completion of a beautiful pendant necklace. Anyone lacking inspiration is guaranteed to find a wealth of it while viewing the many samples Dori will display. Students will leave class with a finished necklace. Please bring bead board along to class. Sign up early to reserve your spot! Class is limited to 15.

Spring Greetings

Springtime greetings are so much fun--and can be even more fun when you send your personalized cards for birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduations, or any time you just need to say hello. Creating your own personalized cards add even more of a special touch to any occasion. Join Christi Sayler and learn how to make your cards say and show exactly what you want! Christi will introduce students to water marks, chalk, chipboard, eyelets, ribbon and more. Students will leave class with two original cards customized for their own use.

Beer Sampling

Gather up your friends for a fun-filled Friday evening and sample the many new beer products on the market! Hy-Vee has expanded its beer choices, and now is your chance to experience the new tastes for the spring and summer season. Students will be sampling imports, craft and specialty beers and get to take a six-pack of their choice home. Experts will explain the different products and answer questions. Also included in the evening event will be a demonstration on grilling and techniques to enhance your entrees prepared on the barbeque. A light meal will be offered. Those attending the class must be 21 years old. Please bring a valid driver's license or other proper identification.

One session: Friday, April 24; 6-8 p.m.

Word For Beginners

So you know what a mouse is and how to click and point. Now you are ready to use Microsoft Word more effectively. Tim Stoneking will help you learn the basic concepts of this computer software. Whether you want to write a letter to your best friend or update your resume, this class will help you. Tim will also review basic computer knowledge and use of the Internet. This will be a hands-on class with a computer for each student. Come with specific questions and leave with lots of answers!

2 sessions: Mondays, April 20 & 27; 6:30-8:00 p.m.
