At the library

Thursday, April 2, 2009

March madness is usually associated with basketball but I think this year it was a great way to describe my job at the Cherokee Public Library. It's been a crazy month and I am definitely ready to move on to April.

First of all I am glad to see April because it means I can quit cleaning toilets. When we lost Mary we lost our custodian as well as our children's librarian, and I have been picking up the slack. I've had help from two of my part time people on weekends but starting each day by checking bathrooms is not the most fun I ever had. I probably would not mind if it didn't eat into the time I need to spend in the office. Let's just say I have happily given up my keys to the janitor's closet.

Second, I am glad to see April because it will bring us a new Youth and Special Services Librarian. We will be making an announcement at the end of this week. I am excited to have a very special person coming on board who I think will bring new energy and spirit to the children's department. It will take her a little time to get things going again but we should be up and running in fine shape by the first of June. I enjoyed the storytimes I did but I have no problem putting my children's librarian hat back up on the shelf.

Third, I am glad to see April because I can get back to my own job. Book ordering, patron requests, overdues and lots of routine office procedures have suffered. I am looking forward to catching up and having time to breathe at work again.

And last but not least, I am glad to see April because it brings a very special anniversary for me. I started working here on April 17, 1984, which means on April 17, 2009, I will complete 25 years at the Cherokee Public Library. Unbelievable! Eight years as children's librarian, one year as the new director, four years with the building project and ten years in the renovated library. They say time flies when you're having fun. I can't say it's all been amusing but the years sure did go by quickly.

If you're out and about during April, stop in and see what's happening at the library. We're open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am -- 8pm, Tuesday & Friday from 10am -- 5pm and Saturday from 10am -- 2pm.
