Fern was born on April 21, 1915, the daughter of Joseph B. and Margaret E. (Kenney) Kramer. She was raised on a farm near Marcus, Iowa and received her education at Holy Name School in Marcus, graduating with high honors in 1933. She later attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Upon completion of the secretarial course, she worked for attorney L. J. McGivern in Marcus for a short time. Later in life she used her secretarial skills working for several years at the Marcus Community High School. Fern was a lifelong, faithful member of Holy Name Catholic Church and active in The Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the Marcus Federated Women's Club for over 50 years.

On February 20, 1939 Fern and Charles G. Addy were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. They made their home in Marcus where they raised their family. Fern was a wife, mother and homemaker first and foremost. She loved gathering family and friends together in her home. She never failed to lend a hand in the family turkey business, or help her children with school projects, paper routes and scouting. In addition, she pursued many hobbies and activities. She was always interested in Marcus history and ancestor history which led to a life long love of genealogy. Her letter writing and research endeavors produced boxes and file cabinets full of the products of her efforts. Quilting became another hobby. She produced many beautifully hand appliquéd and hand quilted quilts for her children and grandchildren. These, in addition to quilted Christmas tree skirts and stockings, are cherished by her family. She dabbled in ceramics, producing many delightful holiday decorations. Fern found great pleasure and relaxation in her gardening, canning, cooking and baking. There was never an absence of some dessert or another in her kitchen.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Charles J. Addy and his wife Frances, John R. Addy, Joan P. Kelley and her husband Michael, all of Omaha, NE, Gayle A. Leitz of Tracy, CA and Ray M. Addy of Marcus; 13 grandchildren and their spouses, Karen (Addy) and Jason Tully, Charles Samuel and Megan Addy and Joseph Addy, Patrick and Michael Addy, Rachel, Emily, Amber, Nicholas and Hannah Kelley, John and Tina Pearson, Maggie Leitz, and Sarah (Leitz) and Matt Perez; 7 great grandchildren Stanley, Amelia and Cora Tully, Charles Richard Addy, Cody and Ashley Pearson and Macy Perez; 3 sisters Anna Strasser of Vero Beach, Fl, Sr. Mary Joel Kramer of Dubuque, IA and Margaret Kistel of Fort Meyers, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 68 years, Charlie, and sisters Patricia Slebodnik and Ruth Fenton Weis.

Memorials may be directed to the Marcus Historical Society, Marcus, Iowa.
