Nelson wins mile run

WAYNE, Neb. - Kara Nelson, daughter of Jim and Sue Nelson of Cherokee, won the Women's Mile Run event at the recent Wayne State College Wildcat Open track meet in Wayne, Nebraska.

Nelson, a Morningside College sophomore, ran the event in a time of 5:13.88. Her triumph was one of three wins for the Mustang women. Their other first place finishers were Vanessa Warzecha in the javelin throw, with a throw of 114-6 and Erin Keitges, who won the women's 3000 meter steeplechase in a time of 11:18.93, shattering the previous meet record by nearly 30 seconds. Keitges' performance qualified her for the NAIA Outdoor Championships.
