Hershey Youth Track & Field Meet on tap

The Cherokee Parks and Recreation Department has announced the date for the annual Hershey Youth Track and Field Meet.

This FREE meet will be held at George Hicks Field in Cherokee on Tuesday, April 21, starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is open to all area boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 years of age.

Youth may enter three events- two track and one field, or one track and two field events. Events include the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4 x 100 meter relay, standing long jump, and the softball throw. Not all events are available for each age group. Boys and girls compete separately, and the age groups are 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14 years of age and enter according to the age they will be on December 31. 2009.

All first place finishers qualify for the State Meet, held in Marshalltown in June. Participants must fill out and mail a special entry form that is available at the Parks and Recreation office, school offices, or any of the Casey's General Stores located in Cherokee, Aurelia, Alta, Marcus, and Paullina. Registration deadline is today.

FUTURE TRACKSTERS RACES. All 7 and 8 year olds are invited to run in special races for kids not old enough for the Hershey meet. We will have the 50 meter dash and the 100 meter dash. No registration is necessary.

FREE HERSHEY CANDY BARS FOR ALL TRACKSTERS. All kids participating will receive a free Hershey candy bar, courtesy of Jason Vanvactor and HyVee Drugstore!

Volunteers are needed to help run this meet. Please call the Parks and Recreation Department at 225-2715, or email cityckerd@evertek.net to volunteer or to receive more information.

Casey's General Store will again be the local meet sponsor for this event organized by the Cherokee Parks and Recreation Department. Casey's General Store sponsorship includes having registration forms available at area Casey's Stores, and providing funds to pay for meet expenses. Organizers sincerely thank the area Casey's stores for helping make this local meet possible.

The Hershey's Youth Track and Field Program is designed to encourage physical fitness among youth and emphasize participation and sportsmanship. Youth, volunteers, and spectators alike are invited to come and enjoy this fun event at George Hicks Field on the Cherokee Washington High School campus in Cherokee.
