Last week I promised another announcement from the Cherokee Public Library. I am really happy to let people know that the library's catalog has been attached to our website and is available online. It's now possible to sit at a home computer and take a look at what our library has to offer. The library's website is www.cherokee.lib.ia.us.
We are also able to give our patrons the opportunity to establish an online account. In order to do so, a short visit to the library is necessary as we have a form that needs to be filled out. When that is completed we will set up the necessary information and send an email out letting the patron know their account is activated.
An online account enables a patron to see what they have checked out, when things are due and if there are any overdue charges on their account. It is also possible to renew items through computer access. If a renewal is blocked, it means someone else has reserved the item or all of the renewal periods have been used up.
We will now be able to take reserves online. If a requested item is available in house, we will pull it and have it ready at the desk. Otherwise, a hold will be placed, and the patron will be notified when it is ready to be checked out.
In order to have an online account, it is necessary to have a valid library card and a current email address. Both can be obtained at the library. A current photo id and/or proof of address are required for the former. Free email accounts may be established through a commercial vendor such as hotmail or yahoo mail by using a public access computer. That process takes about 20 minutes.
We are slower than some libraries in getting this service established, but as they say, better late than never! It will probably be a little time intensive on our end and maybe somewhat nerve wracking but we're pleased to have it in place. Please call 225-3498 with any questions.
Next week our new Youth & Special Services Librarian, Peg Wurth, will be writing her first column. I will be glad to once again share writing responsibilities.
Reminder: Please join us on Friday morning for the chamber coffee and a short celebration of the completion of the east entrance renovation at 9:30 a.m. & 10 a.m. respectively.
