Tales from the Quimby Library

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Connie brought in the mail Thursday at the perfect time. You see, the mail included the new issues of Iowa Gardening and Our Iowa, and it was 15 minutes before the "Green Thumb Gardeners" weekly meeting. The coffee was brewing and Connie let herself be persuaded into staying for our meeting.

Inside the Our Iowa magazine was a packet of seed corn. This isn't ordinary seed corn; it is tropical seed from Mexico and Brazil. An article inside explained about the "Edward Jones Tall Corn Contest" in which you plant this seed and try to grow the tallest stalk in Iowa for a wonderful prize. So our group split up the "magic corn stalk" seeds, and we'll see just what kind of tall corn growers we are! If you're interested in this contest, come on in to the library and check out this magazine.

Our gardening group's spring seed/plant exchange is slated for Thursday, April 30 at 5 p.m. If you over killed on buying seeds this year, or if you cleaned out your garage and discovered you have way more planters than you need, bring them with and see what you can trade them for. Everyone is welcome.

"National Library Week" is April 13-19. Our library will celebrate with an open house every afternoon. Stop in, browse our shelves, have a cup of coffee, and sign up for a door prize. We have on display several new books for adults, teens, and children. Bring your favorite craft to work on and join us for "A Really Good Yarn" on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Starting May 1, we will begin our summer hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Saturday. Looking ahead, summer story hour for preschool through 4th grade will start on June 4 and will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. We will be having a reading challenge for our younger patrons -- stop in for details.

"Be Creative at Your Library" is this summer's library reading program theme. I have some great plans for our program, which will be the week of July 20 through 24 every evening from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (or later!) for preschool through 4th grade. Theme t-shirts may be ordered through the library. Call me at 445-2413 or stop in the library to order for your kids, grandkids, or yourself!

I am planning on a weekly "Teen Time at the Library" this summer same as last summer. I'll need to find out when will be the best time to meet and will keep you updated. I'm looking for fun crafts that we can do. If you have any ideas or requests, please let me know. Until next time, keep on reading!
